Vincent's Kitchen is a restaurant providing a community atmosphere,
and a low cost meal in a dignified way to the needy and hungry of
the Durham Region.
Durham
Outlook for the Needy is the umbrella organization, which operates
St. Vincent's Kitchen and St. Vincent's Second Hand Store. St. Vincent's
Kitchen served its first meal on October 15, 1990.
The
Durham Region has a population of about 500 000. Many of these
are in need! Some are post psychiatric patients, single parents,
elderly, disabled, refugees or unemployed. Others are trying to
overcome drug, alcohol or gamling addictions. Many live in rooms
that take most of their income and with no cooking facilities at
all.
St.
Vincent's Kitchen offers a full meal for $1.25 to the needy
and hungry of Durham Region. Patrons of the restaurant are encouraged
to pay the minimal amount so that they can maintain their dignity.
St.
Vincent's Discount Store has volunteers sort, price and make
seasonal changes to donated clothing and household items with profits
going to support the Kitchen.
